What Would I Look Like With Gray Hair App

Gray  hair  is  a  natural  part  of  the  aging  process ,  but  showing  off  your  gray  hair  is  often a  very  personal  decision .

Gray hair is now becoming a trend among younger women, as well as remaining a symbol for age positivity. In response to these shifting attitudes I find myself wondering if I should let my hair go gray, and I have heard from other women that they are dealing with the same quandary.

Ever wondered what you would look like with gray hair?  Me, too.  So I tested out some of the highest rated hair color apps on the App Store, looking specifically for the best apps to show gray hair. I tested out ten apps in total, but these were the only two that I felt had natural depictions of gray hair. If you're already rocking your gray hair, these apps have tons of other fun colors to try as well.

ModiFace  Hair  Color  App :

This app  uses augmented reality (AR) and works like a Snapchat filter, projecting the color onto your hair even as you tilt your head or play with your hair.  You can also use a photo like I did with the bio picture.

Pros :

  • You get to see what the color looks like in real time
  • The app itself is free
  • The color looks natural and realistic in real time, instead of looking painted-on like most apps
  • Very easy to use

Cons :

  • While the app is free, it costs $1.99 to unlock the gray shades
  • The quality goes down when using it on a still image, like the one above
  • The color won't show up very brightly on already vibrant hair and may not get all your hair
  • You can't test highlights/balayage/ombré coloring because you can't layer hair

Hair  Color  Dye  by  Liming  Zhang :

This appworks by drawing the color on top of a still picture of you (like this picture of my beloved and me that my daughter took). You have the option of either outlining the hair and then filling it in, or painting the color on yourself. Although there are some aspects that still look a little fake, this is the most natural-looking app of its kind I found for gray hair.

Here is Hair Color Dye app using the bio picture.  Voila! Can you tell that's not my hair color?  Pretty amazing, I think.

Pros :

  • The app and many of the gray shades are free
  • Although this is a scribble-it-on coloring app, the color is opaque enough to show the highlights and lowlights of your natural hair
  • The color applied is vibrant enough to work well on even my bright red hair
  • You can apply layers using this app

Cons :

  • It only works on still pictures
  • Some shades still cost money
  • It takes a little time to outline your hair accurately enough to look realistic
  • The edges will always look a little off

Also, there are lots of colorful combos to to try out like this one.  Here's to channeling our inner mermaid!

For now, I'll stick with red, but if you're on the fence about embracing the gray – or want to rock some different shades – check out these apps.
