Does It Say In The Bible Thou Shall Not Eat Animals
Q: I have an ongoing problem because I'thousand living as a hypocrite. I'm an animate being lover merely I eat meat. I don't eat veal or lamb because they are from young animals, merely I eat meat, fish, fowl and eggs. Is there anything in the Bible that refers to this or to Christ'south personal practice? Did Jesus consume meat? I'm aware that I'grand looking for absolution for eating meat, merely I tin can't go rid of this conflict in my mind. Equally I say, it is hypocritical. I would never hunt or fish, but I eat what someone else kills to put meat on my table. Is killing and eating animals a sin in the eyes of God or Jesus? What would Jesus take said? -- From L
P.S. I contribute to many animal groups, particularly to help farm animals and to ban dog racing, etc., but it doesn't erase the guilt.
A: In Genesis 1:29 God speaks to Adam,
"And God said, Behold, I accept given you every herb-bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the world, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to y'all information technology shall be for food."
In the second affiliate of Genesis (2:16-17) vegetarianism is re-affirmed as people'south spiritually proper diet. Even so, 1 tree in the Garden of Eden bore forbidden fruit,
"And the Lord God allowable the human, proverb, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, grand shalt not eat of it: for in the day that m eatest thereof grand shalt surely die."
Nothing could be clearer. God does not want us to swallow meat. People are made in God's image and animals are not, but this spiritual difference is non sufficiently morally significant to allow killing animals for food. Killing some other person is a upper-case letter crime and a sin. Killing an brute is only a sin.
The moral and spiritual ambiguity about eating meat is made more than explicit in the 9th chapter of Genesis (Genesis 9:three-half-dozen) when God tells Noah in the covenant made with him afterward the Bully Flood,
"Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for y'all; fifty-fifty as the dark-green herb take I given you all things. But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat. And surely your claret of your lives will I require; at the hand of every creature volition I require it, and at the paw of man; at the hand of every homo's blood brother will I crave the life of man. Whoso sheddeth man'due south blood, by human shall his blood exist shed: for in the paradigm of God fabricated he man."
So God has a change of centre and strikes what I consider to be a perfect spiritual balance. God is maxim that being a vegetarian is clearly the higher style, but it is not the only style. Meat is non murder, but information technology is not the highest moral level to which nosotros can drag our diet. Eating meat besides makes u.s. comfy around blood, and blood is life. Spilling the claret of animals makes us less revolted by spilling the blood of people.
This nuanced position that eating meat is a concession to homo cannibal urges but not our highest level helps us to larn that the Bible offers united states many levels of spiritual practice. We can live a life on as high a level as we want.
The question of whether or not Jesus was a vegetarian is complicated. At that place is no direct argument on the subject past Jesus in the New Testament. The story of Jesus feeding fish to people would back up the view that Jesus may have been a pescatarian. Paul seems to take been more open up to meat eating, but even Paul was open up to vegetarianism. In 1 Corinthians viii:13 Paul said, "Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will consume no flesh while the world standeth, lest I brand my brother to offend." So for Paul vegetarianism was a style of non offending vegetarian hosts, but was non an explicit command of God.
Mod Christianity has produced the vegetarian Seventh Day Adventists who are vegetarians because of the teachings of their co-founder Ellen G. White.
So what can I say to ease your carnivorous guilt? I would suggest that you lot experiment with meatless Mondays, and so no meat till dinner, and then perchance a period of time when you lot eat no meat for a period of time. Your moral intuitions are right. There is something hypocritical about the style we profess life and then swallow the globe to decease. Retrieve that your journey to God has many levels and you lot ought to have no shame or guilt nearly the stage of your journey that you accept reached so far.
